- Arthur busses tables in a Chinese restaurant, plays trombone in the high school marching band, and has his eye on smart, funny, offbeat Lila – who definitely has her eye on him. But as Arthur takes tentative steps towards his first romantic relationship, the long time relationships of the adults around him teeter and crash, drawing Arthur into a vortex of events that will change his world forever.

As film critics fawn over this seeming “independent” and “working-class” blip of cinematic art, don’t be naive. David Green is but a young man who has too early granted himself the luxury — indeed, the laziness — of pursuing ironic commentary on the human condition. Predictably, he navigates the pertaining issues with extraordinary cliche. This is NOT a work of art that arose from America’s working-class, small-town silent majority. This is an elitist, cynical and conveniently bigoted film that employs religious, economic and psychological stereotypes in the service of an overall bland story. Moreover, it treats the psychoses and resulting homicide with such lavishing detail that its tone creeps well into a territory of perversion — all eyes on little Mr. Green for that.

I didn’t think it was possible to break into my TOP 5 list of the all-time worst movies I’ve ever seen… but it did. Now, don’t get me wrong. There may be worse movies than my ‘top 5′ but I was smart enough not to see them.
Unfortunately, I was not smart enough to miss this one. My fault.
Kate Beckinsale proves she cannot carry a movie if she has more than five lines to read. Sam Rockwell brings this film down just as he did Clooney’s ‘Dangerous Mind’. Even the high school band is bad… (I know, they’re supposed to be… but they’re not funny bad, just bad-bad.)
This ‘film’ is a good example of the Sundance-indie-genre where people THINK they are supposed to like it because it’s low-budget and serious. The intellectual capacity behind this film is what is ‘low budget’… not the money invested.
As bad as the acting is, the writing and direction is even worse. Beckinsale and Rockwell did not have a chance. And whoever cast Beckinsale’s lover better find a new profession.
I could deconstruct this movie for the next 12 paragraphs and tell you exactly why it is so bad… but then I would be wasting far more intellectual energy than this movie has or deserves.
This film is a travesty of bad everything. It is so bad, it should be funny, but it isn’t.
Half way throught the film, the only two words I wanted to see were –
THE END.
(Drumroll please…)
The top 5 worst movies of all time (in chronological order)–
1. Tron
2. Highlander II
3. Bad Timing
4. Russian Ark
5. Snow Angels

I bought this because of the good reviews. UGH. Depressing, awful people with no reason to live except to make their lives even more miserable. save your money, don’t make yourself miserable by watching this.
Are you getting tired of titles that have no meaning in the story? Here is an excellent example. What any of this has to do with snow angels is beyond me. can’t you find SOMETHING that says what the movie is about? pathetic beyond words. good acting by kate beckinsale but certainly not good enough to waste your time. I repeat. UGH

What a depressing movie. Any rational person in the position of 16 or 17-year old Arthur would have good cause to have second thoughts about romance. And, all this horrible stuff around him is happening as he tries to experience his first romance. I could have been a good lesson that adults have their problems with their marriages (just as one does as a teen just starting out in love), but that they can be solved. The movie would still have had merit if some of the situations were resolved positively.
My big, unforgivable, complaint with the movie is that the one who is made out to be an Evangelical Christian turns out to be the most evil person in the bunch. As millions can testify, there is nothing in Christianity that even remotely predisposes a person to evil; it is the other way around. [There are examples of those who are deeply evil try to use Christianity as a cover. But, those people don't get down on their knees in the privacy of their rooms, as was shown in this movie.] Any bad language or sexuality are of very minor importance in the film.
So, what might have been a good story is marred by excessively depressive events. This is amplified by a total misrepresentation of Christianity. If you want to have a nice evening bringing on or amplifying ‘the blues’ this might be the movie for you. The only positive note is that, in spite of all the negativity around him, Arthur seemed to be making progress with his new girlfriend (with her doing most of the ‘helping along’). I prefer something more edifying and uplifting.

What a waste of time and money. My husband and I bought this as we are fans of Kate Beckinsale and were looking forward to watching it. We had waited for it to play in Denver but it never did. Big surprise – an uglier, more disturbing, depressing movie, we can’t remember. What redeeming value exists in this movie? None. It doesn’t teach, it doesn’t uplift, it doesn’t help you grow, and it certainly doesn’t entertain. I have the feeling the film maker and actors must be a bit full of themselves and feel that the more disturbing and depressing the story the better the “art”. Our DVD went immediately into the trash.
